Behind the Lens: A Day in the Life of an Architectural Photographer in Glasgow

Met with a rather dull winters day in Glasgow, I prepare for another day of Completion photographs. Today, my focus is on two recent developments at the SSE Hydro—projects completed by Clark Contracts. These include the strikingly designed Sky Lounge and Super Suite 2, which features a gothic chic design. With about an hour to capture both spaces, it’s time to get to work.
Early Morning: Getting Ready
The day begins with a strong cup of coffee and a review of my agenda. Armed with my reliable Sony camera and for this particular assignment a 14-24mm Sigma Art lens for wide shots and a 24-70mm GM lens, both versatile, sharp and fast to alter perspective for quick assignments like this, I’m ready for this completion photography assignment. Clear communication with the main contracts manager of the site from Clark Contracts and my contact at their head office is crucial to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Mid-Morning: Capturing the Sky Lounge
Upon arriving at the SSE Hydro, I check in and ensure I adhere to the site's health and safety guidelines. Then, it’s straight to the Sky Lounge. With the freedom to explore, I take a moment to assess the layout and pinpoint the key features to highlight. The lounge's modern design offers a range of angles and compositions, making it a photographer's dream.
I collaborate with the contracts manager to discuss which elements are most crucial to capture, ensuring our approach is both focused and effective. The space is impressively designed, and I appreciate its vibrant atmosphere. Given its elevated position in the stands, the team had to navigate several constraints to make the most of the available dimensions, showcasing their skill in overcoming design challenges.
Focusing on Super Suite 2
After wrapping up at the Sky Lounge, I move on to Super Suite 2. This elegantly designed space, with its gothic chic elements, presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Again, I take my time to walk around and find the best angles, working within the one-hour timeframe to ensure I capture the essence of the room. I maintain communication with my contact at the head office, keeping them updated on my progress and ensuring alignment with their expectations.
Late Afternoon: Post-Processing
Editing a video file on Adobe After effects
Once the shooting is complete, I return to my home studio to review the images. During post-processing, I refine each photograph in both Adobe lightroom, after effects and Photoshop to accurately represent both the Sky Lounge and Super Suite 2, enhancing the colours and lighting while keeping a natural look.
After I’m satisfied with the edits, I prepare a selection of images to share with the Clark Contracts team. This collaboration is invaluable, as it ensures that the final photos meet their vision and needs.
Evening: Reflecting on the Day
As the day comes to a close, I reflect on the experience of photographing these two developments at the SSE Hydro. Each space showcases the quality and attention to detail that Clark Contracts is known for. The opportunity to engage in completion photography allows me to capture the essence of both locations, adding a personal touch to my work.
